ICanHazChatCam About
the story behind the name
ICanHazChatCam is a browser webcam chat that pairs you with one stranger at a time, with clubs and live streams around it. This page covers where the odd name comes from, who uses the site and what we promise.
No sign-up form · Free to start · Text, voice or cam

Because the name says what you want in the way the internet likes to say it. "I can haz" comes from the cat-photo captions that made broken grammar a kind of affection: a hopeful cat, a missing word, a request nobody could refuse.
Put "chat cam" on the end and you get the whole product in one slightly silly sentence: someone asking, a little hopefully, for a conversation on camera.
We liked that it is impossible to say with a straight face. Video chat sites often sound like banks or nightclubs. This one sounds like someone asking nicely, which is roughly the attitude we want you to bring to every match. Polite, a bit playful, and not taking yourself too seriously.
In daily use people shorten it. Some write icanhazchat, some say it out loud and type it the way it sounds. Either way, you end up at ICanHazChatCam.
It pairs you with one stranger at a time for a video, voice or text chat, right in your browser, and lets you skip to someone new whenever you like. Nothing to install, no form to fill in, and a Start button that does exactly what it says.
Around that sit a few extras: user-run clubs for group chat, live streams you can watch and join in on, and follows so a good conversation can continue another day.
People from more than fifty countries, and many of the faces you meet are girls. The US accounts for roughly one user in five, and the UK, Germany, Canada and France follow as some of the bigger groups. Evenings are when most of them turn up.
Most come in the evening, after work or study, looking for a conversation that does not require leaving the couch.
There is no typical user, really. Students practicing English between classes, night-shift workers on a break, people who just moved somewhere new and do not know anyone yet. Matching is random, so you will not always meet someone from your own country. That is part of the fun: a five-minute chat with a stranger in another time zone is a small window into a life very different from yours.
What they share is that they would rather talk to a person than scroll past one. Some want five minutes of small talk. Some want to practice a language. Some come back every night to the same clubs. All of those are fine reasons to be here.
Most of the time you get one stranger, your full attention on them and theirs on you. We think that is where the good conversations happen. In a crowded room, the loudest person sets the tone; one on one, even quiet people get to be interesting.
It is also why the webcam chat guide spends so long on light and sound: in a one-on-one, the details of how you come across matter. Groups still have a place, which is why clubs exist. But they sit alongside matching rather than replacing it, and they are run by the people in them rather than by us. If you want to read along before speaking, a club is perfect. If you want to actually talk to someone tonight, press Start.
We would rather promise less and mean it. A chat site can only control so much: the tools, the rules, the pricing and how honestly it describes them. What happens inside each conversation is up to the two people in it. Here is the short list we hold ourselves to.
None of this is complicated, but it is easy to forget when a site is new and wants to look bigger than it is. If you ever catch us breaking one of these, tell us at the support address and we will fix it.
| We promise | We will not claim |
|---|---|
| Real people on the other end of a match | That every chat will be a good one |
| Free to start, with coins after your free matches | That everything is free forever |
| Skip, block and report on every chat | That nobody will ever be rude |
| Clubs run by the people in them | That a busy club is waiting at every hour |
Like guests in someone else's kitchen. Be curious, be kind, take a no the first time, and leave quietly when a chat is not working. Keep personal details to yourself and never send money to someone you met here. In clubs, the extra rules are no screenshots and no posting outside contact details.
If someone breaks those rules, skip them, block them and report them. The anonymous chat page has more on keeping your details private, and our notes on chatting with strangers cover what a good first minute looks like.
Most good chats here start with a question, not a compliment.
Email is the way in, and a real reply is the goal. Write to [email protected] for account trouble, payment questions or anything a report button cannot cover. The contact page lists what to include so we can answer in one go, and the ICanHazChatCam home page is where you start chatting.

Both point to the same place. ICanHazChatCam is the full name; the shorter version is simply how a lot of people type it.
It is a website that works like an app. Open it in a mobile browser and add it to your home screen to get a full-screen icon, with nothing to download.
Grown-ups only, as set out in our Terms of Service, and accounts that break the rules can be removed.
Through coins. New users get free matches, the Reward Center hands out more while you stay online, and after that matches and gifts use coins. VIP is also available.
Yes, email support with your idea. We read everything, though we cannot promise to build every suggestion.
